What Is Underground Comic Art?

Underground comic art is a type of comic that lives outside the mainstream. It started popping up in the 1960's and 70's when artists wanted to create comics that were more personal, raw, and often rebellious. These comics didn’t follow the usual rules of superhero stories or kid-friendly strips. Instead, they explored adult themes, social issues, and sometimes just pure weirdness.

This is why I love this style. My father was the first to introduce me to underground comics. He said, "your style reminds me of the 60's/70's underground comics movement...you should check out - UNDERGROUND COMIX.

I did and fell in love immediately. I resonated with the art style, absurdist humor, bold pen strokes, inking and stylized lines, the social movement commentary, weird humor. This style pushed the boundaries back at that time it was started,( the 1960s and '70s), boldly expressing counter-culture and appealing to intellectual-types. I was intrigued immediately, especially since my father introduced me to the whole underground comics (Underground Comix) art style. He and I share a love for drawing, and IMO, an impressive man, intellectual, and talented artist (political satire cartoons). He inspires me with his drawings, absurdist humor, and we occassionally trade handdrawn comics. My dad is often spotted wearing a jet black pork-pie hat and dark sunglasses, relaxing by the water with his lovely wife. But let's not get too personal, (stay focused, Rainee).

Back to the subject matter -

Here’s what makes underground comic art stand out:

  • Independent and DIY Most underground comics are self-published or printed by small presses. Artists have full control over their work, which means no big company telling them what to do. This fits the vibe obviously.

  • Edgy and Unfiltered These comics often tackle topics like politics, drugs, sex, and counterculture. They don’t shy away from controversial or taboo subjects (which makes them all-the-more interesting). Do you have any secret underground comics that you've drawn, or that you have collected? If so, comment below this post and let me know, #undergroundcomics

  • Unique Art Styles The art can be rough, sketchy, or highly detailed. It’s all about expression, not perfection. My style uses heavy inking, detail work, and sometimes rough sketches. What's your style?

  • Character-Driven Stories Instead of superheroes, you get oddball characters with strong personalities and weird adventures. And before you get upset, I have nothing against superheroes, I actually just love comics in general as it appeals to my secret nerd-side (and the fact that I love collections).

  • Limited Runs and Collectibility Because they’re often printed in small batches, underground comics can become rare collector’s items. I still have yet to collect the ones I admire from women comics and underground comics movement. Let me know your favorites and recommendations.

What Is Absurdist Humor and Why Does It Fit Underground Comics?

Absurdist humor is all about the unexpected, the strange, and the downright silly. It plays with logic by twisting it into something that doesn’t quite make sense but still feels funny or meaningful. Think of it as humor that laughs at the chaos of life and the weirdness of human existence. Who can't relate to that?

Here’s how absurdist humor works in underground comic art:

  • Breaking Expectations

Instead of a punchline that makes perfect sense, absurdist humor might surprise you with something random or bizarre. This is so me...random...weird humor.

  • Highlighting Life’s Nonsense

It points out how strange and confusing life can be, often without clear answers.

  • Using Surreal Imagery

The art and story might show impossible scenes or characters behaving in odd ways. I like to exaggerate faces and create odd looking creatures.

  • Playing with Language

Sometimes the jokes come from wordplay, nonsense words, or strange conversations. Can you relate to this?

  • Creating a Unique Mood

It can be funny, creepy, or just plain weird, but it always leaves an impression.

These pieces show how humor and art can mix to create something truly original.

Examples of Underground Comic Art and Absurdist Humor

Let’s look at some examples that show how underground comic art and absurdist humor come together. These examples are easy to relate to and show the style’s playful, rebellious spirit.

  • A Talking Animal with a Bad Attitude

Imagine a raccoon who’s fed up with city life and complains about everything in a mix of sarcasm and nonsense. The art might be rough but full of personality.

  • A World Where Gravity Works Backwards

Characters walk on ceilings, objects float randomly, and nothing follows normal rules. The humor comes from how confused everyone is.

  • A Character Who Speaks Only in Gibberish

The story uses made-up words and sounds, but the emotions and situations still connect with the reader.

  • A Political Cartoon That Uses Absurdity to Make a Point

Instead of a straightforward message, the comic shows politicians as circus clowns juggling flaming torches. It’s funny but also sharp.

  • A Dream-Like Adventure with No Clear Ending

The story jumps from one strange scene to another, leaving you wondering what it all means.

Why Underground Comic Art Matters Today

You might wonder why this style still matters. Here’s the deal: underground comic art gives artists a way to express themselves freely. It’s a space where creativity isn’t boxed in by rules or trends.
